PENGERANG: The development of phase three of the Pengerang Deepwater Terminal (PDT) is set to attract more refining and petrochemical companies aside from downstream petrochemical manufacturing plants.

Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad said the development also has the potential to bring in multi-billion ringgit investment into the state and the country besides creating a more value-added economy, skilled workforce, and long-term economic activity.

“PDT phase one was a catalyst for the Petronas Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development project, which brought in investments worth more than RM100bil.

“Sequentially, this led to the forming of the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex that has served the locals and neighbouring communities well, through job-creation and other indirect economic benefits and I am confident that it will continue to do so in the long run, ” he said.

He said this during a speech at the PDT phase 3A opening ceremony at the Dialog Group Bhd (Dialog) Terminal Pengerang five, here yesterday.

Hasni added that to date, 50% of the land in PDT has been developed with 202ha available for future development.

“PDT is still in the early phase of completing its full potential and continued investments will certainly bring significant economic benefits to Johor.

“It will also further transform Pengerang to be a vibrant and sustainable township in years to come, ” he said adding that the state government also hopes that Pengerang will become Asia-Pacific’s largest oil, gas, and petrochemical hub.

“The Johor state government remains committed in its support for the development of the PDT, ” added Hasni.

Meanwhile, at the opening ceremony, Dialog executive chairman Tan Sri Ngau Boon Keat said the development of PDT in stages has grown from strength to strength since the a Memorandum of Understanding was first signed with the Johor state government back in 2009.

“With the first two phases of PDT already in operations, the official opening of this new terminal is another significant milestone in this direction and is expected to catalyse the further development of PDT.

“To date, the total investment in phase one, phase two and phase three has exceeded RM13.5bil. With 202ha reserved for phase three and future phases, PDT has the potential to attract more petrochemical complexes and manufacturing plants into Pengerang, ” he said.

Phase 3A is the first parcel of PDT’s phase three that consist of storage tanks with a capacity of 430,000 cubic metres for clean petroleum products, common tankage facilities, including shared infrastructure, and deepwater marine facilities.
